What is Surf Therapy?

Surf Therapy brings together experienced surf coaches with formally attained skills in talk-based therapy.
Empathy and genuine care are the hallmarks of successful coaching, but a Surf Therapist will also include a safe space for vulnerability, growth, and healing.
It is widely known that surfing aids in strengthening and developing a wide range of positive physical, social and psychological attributes, but the addition of a skilled therapist safely broadens these benefits to create healing and growth beyond a client’s own ability and/or regular coaching sessions.
Surf Therapy will not only improve your surfing technically but also deepen your connection to your surfing journey in a way that is purposeful and long-lasting.

Who will be my Surf Therapist?

Surf Therapy is offered through a collaborative partnership with Land & Sea Therapy’s Sarra Robertson, a professional longboarder from 1992 to 2004; with degrees in Psychology, Contemporary Visual Art, Secondary Education, Freelance Creative/Designer, a practising professional contemporary artist, founder and owner of Land & Sea Therapy and long time and multi-generational Northern Rivers local.

What approach is taken?

The therapeutic approach to Surf Therapy by Sarra is based on her social psychology research, The Mindful Surfer. This research brings together her 35 years of surfing experience as a professional surfer, mother, through post-injury, an academic, a woman, and a member of the broader surfing industry. It encompasses all aspects of the surfing journey from a historical, personal, psychosocial, and pragmatic perspective using mindfulness techniques. Sarra will skilfully, kindly and intuitively build a surf therapy program to meet you where you are at; which can be done during one session or as many as you need.
